Pwm Valve Controller for John Blue Fertilizer Pump

Subject: Planter fertilizer pumps - PWM for JD Rate Controller

We've been running hydraulic centrifugal pumps on our planters. One tractor has tanks on the tractor itself, and the pump has trouble getting air and burning up the seal in one season. The other rig pulls a cart with the pump mounted right under the tank and works well, except for those times when you have 20 other things going on and forget to shut the pump off after it runs empty.

For those reasons, we want to switch both rigs to positive displacement pumps. SureFire ag has turn key setups at a premium for ease of installation. They offer a hydraulically driven diaphragm pump (Hypro D115) at around $5000 for the setup with flow meter and needed wiring.

I can get that same pump from Ag Spray for $1000 and a mounting kit for hyd motor is 250. I would still need the pwm valve and hydraulic motor itself. I can do the wiring myself. I'm proficient at soldering and inserting pins in the proper spots on the various connectors. I have flow meters already for both rigs, they arent the fancy mag meters but I havent had much trouble with the raven impeller style flow meters.

Anyone have some sources for the rest of the parts I need to do this myself?

Other option would be a john blue piston pump. Looks like the pump would be about 2000 plus hyd motor and pwm valve.

Thanks for any suggestions.

I'm looking to do the same thing, I found that ag express sells pwm valves that control up to 8 gpm. They also sell a motor but it doesn't turn fast enough for the pump. dewgubbe

Looks like john blue has the pump for about 1000 and the motor with pwm valve is about 800.

Just need to get the right pins for the rate controller.

When using a greenstar rate controller, the pwm valve will use different pins than if hooked to a regulating valve. Both are just 2 wires, but will need hooked into different spots on the 37 pin plastic connector?

Hypro diaphragm pumps work really well in that situation. We were having same issues as you with centrifugal ace pumps and made the switch. They will self prime and can run dry with no issues. Check ebay time to time can find Hypro pumps on there. I run d70 and found both on ebay. DevinF

That I can't help with, mine will be going on an agleader and I'm pretty sure the pwm pins are the same as the standard rate up and down pins. DevinF

Do you use hydraulic motor to drive it? If so what motor and valve? knks

Right now just built bracket and chain drive pump with charlynn motor. Have to look at tag on motor just can't remember what it is. Control it with raven oil flow valve, again not sure what model it is works simply and does a good job. knks

Actually the wiring is the same whether using a flow control valve or a PWM valve, when the type of valve is changed in the monitor the rate controller changes the drivers for the type of valve.

hoss,

Are pwm valves polarity sensitive?

We run the John blue pumps with the pwm on both our 1770s. They worked great, the JD rate controller plugs right into the can/iso harness underneath the ccs tanks. The footswitch gets wired in up front. It all is ran off the 2630 then. Nice to have an alarm when you get empty/forget to open valve and it isn't applying desired rate. Used an ag express harness from rate controller to tie in section control valves/flowmeter/pressure sensor/pwm/height sensor to engage. Used the Raven impeller flow meters. The pinout diagram in the back of the rate controller book helped with making all connections. I like the piston pumps as they will generate enough vacuum to prime themselves even when an air bubble in lines.

Thanks David,

Maybe when planting season gets closer I could get your cal numbers. You've done just what I want to do with the pump setup

No problem, one thing we had to address was hydraulics. I didn't feel like running power beyond for pumps, when we tied into frame lift/hyd air compressor line it would bypass through pump backwards and not lift the planter, so put check valves in on the return side. We also put a flow control valve on pressure side to keep things in balance. Otherwise it would flow too much and the ccs fan and hyd air compressor would starve.
